We made it!
Well, we actually left Altorf at 10:45 pm last night and started our drive to the UP (that is pronounced YOU-pee). Mike was glad to be done with his twice weekly classes for a while so he drove. And drove. And drove. We had good music on the radio and it was a beautiful night - lit by a big hazy full moon. We stopped for gas and a couple of rest areas. At the gas station (around 1 or 2 am north of Beloit) the 3 teenagers running the joint gave us our coffee for free - just waved us off when we tried to pay for it. Either we looked particularly pathetic and they figured they were doing their good deed by giving free coffee to the 2 geezers asleep at the wheel OR they just wanted us out of there so they could go back to the game of flirting with each other.
Around Stevens Point Wisconsin we stopped at a rest area, pushed our seats back, and took a snooze. My one regret was that I forgot to bring along a blanket or two. It was a bit chilly but we just put on our sweatshirts and enjoyed the coolness of it all. After a couple of hours of snoring we made our way back onto the highway. Saw deer and gorgeous misty lakes in the early light. Stopped at Lenny's - I mean Denny's - for a nasty breakfast and I thoroughly enjoyed ordering from the seniors menu for the first time (55 and up!).
We tried to take our time but arrived at our motel on Lake Superior about noon. The desk clerk was kind enough to check us in right away. And what a great place this is! We`are literally right on the lake and beside a river outlet that has a perfect launch area for the kayak. I did not trust us to go for it this afternoon - we are both pretty wiped out and I suspect the lake will require everything we've got in terms of strength, stamina, and quick thinking. So we satisfied ourselves with wandering around the beach looking for the resident bear. There really is a bear. Not a pet just a lazy hungry black bear that likes to scare your food out of your hands if you happen to have any.
So here we are in the land of "Hey dere you betcha"
We will be posting again soon with photos of us in the lake, we hope!
Life is good!
